Y Combinator alternatives: where to apply instead, sorted by why you're looking
Where to apply instead of YC, or as well: bigger checks, rolling review, other deal shapes, no move to SF. Each program in its own words, dated.
By Venture ListPublished Updated Links checked September 2026How we check
The best Y Combinator alternative depends on what about YC doesn't fit you. If you want a check the size of YC's, a16z speedrun, Neo, PearX, the South Park Commons Founder Fellowship, Accel Atoms and Boost VC publish checks in the same range or above. If you don't want to wait for a batch deadline, Accel Atoms and AI House review applications on a rolling basis. If it's the deal itself, Iterative, Neo and Sequoia Arc structure theirs differently, and some programs take no equity at all.
This guide sorts the alternatives by those reasons. Each program's terms appear in the short form our posters use, and each quote comes from the program's own pages, as we read them on 29 or 30 September 2026. It doesn't rank them: we don't have acceptance rates or results, and no program pays to be here. The full terms, with the arithmetic that compares them, are in how much equity accelerators take.
01YC, as the baseline
Y Combinator invests $500,000 per company: a fixed 7% for the first $125,000, and the rest on an uncapped SAFE that converts at your next round. The batch runs in person in San Francisco, and an on-time application gets a decision by a date YC names. How that deal works, line by line, is in YC vs Techstars vs a16z speedrun. The next deadline is in the Next deadlines strip in room 03. YC on the list.
Everything below is measured against those three things: the check, the calendar and the city.

"Terms" is each program's check in the short form our posters use; hover a cell for the full sentence. Iterative's cell shows its program fee (there is none) rather than its stake, and Sequoia Arc's is blank because its terms have no short form; both are explained below.
03If you want a check as big as YC's
These programs publish checks at or above YC's. Their full terms, and the stake each implies, are in the equity guide:
- a16z speedrun: up to $1M, half of it in your next round. The comparison guide quotes its deal next to YC's.
- Neo: its Residency check is uncapped (how that works).
- PearX: a range, set per company (its terms).
- South Park Commons Founder Fellowship: its tagline reads "$1M and deep support to build what only you can." How that $1M splits is in the equity guide.
- Accel Atoms: up to $1M–$2M. Read who it's for first. Its home page (opens in a new tab), read on 29 September 2026: "Accel Atoms is a pre-seed scaling program that brings together the best of Accel’s resources and global network, for Indian & Indian-origin founders building from anywhere."
- Boost VC: leads pre-seed rounds, for deep tech founders (its terms).
PearX's own tagline makes a claim about how hard it is to get in:
A015PearXIn their words
“Go from 0 to 1 with our elite program for PRE-SEED founders”
That figure is PearX's, not ours; we have no way to check it, and none of the other programs here states an acceptance rate in the facts we hold.
Two more spell out how the money arrives. Alliance pays on admission:
A043AllianceTerms
“$800k Funding $400k upon admission + $400k follow-on at seed. Interview invites sent within 1 week of application.”
Our reading: $800K: $400K on admission + $400K follow-on at seed
Alliance is a specialist. Its home page, read on 30 September 2026: "We help crypto & fintech startups reach product-market fit." If you're not building in crypto or fintech, skip it. Alliance on the list.
Betaworks Camp splits its check with partners. Its application page, read on 30 September 2026: "Betaworks and our syndicate partners will each invest up to $250k for a total of up to $500k investment per team." Its camp page (opens in a new tab) says each camp is "12 weeks “in-residence” at Betaworks", and the program describes itself as "a thematic investment and in-residence program for startups building in frontier technologies." Its next applications open in December and January (dates, quoted). Betaworks Camp on the list.
If the size of the check matters less to you than a fixed, published stake, the programs with smaller checks are compared in Techstars alternatives, next to Techstars' own deal.
04Read the headline number carefully
The biggest numbers in the table are not all paid the same way:
- Ceilings. Accel Atoms, AI House and Betaworks Camp state a maximum ("up to"), so the check you get may be smaller.
- Ranges. PearX and Boost VC state a range; PearX says its check is tailored to what each company needs.
- Money later. a16z speedrun's up to $1M is half up front and half in your next round. The South Park Commons Fellowship's $1M is also split between now and your next round.
YC's quote names no later tranche: $500,000, in two parts with different terms. If what you need is runway this year, compare the money you get at the start, then what each part costs you in stake. The equity guide treats follow-on promises as a separate item to check.
05If you don't want to wait for a batch
YC decides on-time applications by a date; a late one waits with no promised answer. Some programs read applications whenever they arrive. Their exact words are quoted in how long accelerators take to answer; in short:
- Accel Atoms takes applications on a rolling basis.
- AI House, formerly AI2 Incubator, has no batches or cohort dates. It calls itself "a company-building community, incubator, and capital", and asks founders for at least a month in Seattle. It backs applied AI companies (AI startup accelerators).
- a16z speedrun reviews on a rolling basis and states a range of weeks.
Others time a step rather than the whole wait. Seedcamp counts two weeks from the first meeting, and Alliance's quote above promises interview invites within a week. The table shows each stated time in short form.
06If the deal is the problem
YC's fixed 7% and uncapped SAFE are one deal shape. Three programs here use another:
- Iterative states its stake as a range rather than a fixed number (its terms). Its home page (opens in a new tab), read on 30 September 2026: "We invest US $150K to $500K each in a batch of startups, twice a year".
- Neo takes participation rights in your next round instead of a stake up front (its terms).
- Sequoia Arc has no standard deal: its terms are set per company (its words). Its page describes it as "Sequoia’s bi-annual open call for outlier early stage founders."
If you want to give up no equity at all, a different set of programs applies: nonprofits, university programs and fellowships, quoted in accelerators that take no equity.
07If you can't move, or you're applying alone
YC's batch is in San Francisco, and several alternatives above expect you there too: a16z speedrun and PearX say so on their own pages, and Neo's Residency runs at its SF space. How long each one keeps you in the city is in accelerators in San Francisco.
Outside San Francisco:
- Seedcamp is a European investor. Its FAQ (opens in a new tab), read on 29 September 2026: "We remain Europe’s original first check investor, but the best European founders are moving west earlier than ever." Its first check is in the table.
- Accel Atoms, by its own description, backs founders "building from anywhere".
- AI House asks for a month in Seattle, not a move.
- Techstars runs Techstars Anywhere, which is remote-first; it and the programs that compete with it are in Techstars alternatives.
Every program on the list that says where you work, from fully remote to in person, is sorted in remote accelerators.
On solo founders: YC says it regularly accepts them (quoted). PearX says it welcomes solo founders, a16z speedrun accepts them but prefers teams, and AI House states a separate starting check for solo founders. Each program's own words, and the one program that turns solo founders away, are in accelerators for solo founders.
08If YC said no
We don't know why any single application is turned down, and we don't collect founders' reports. What the facts do show is that calendars differ, so a no from YC doesn't have to cost you a season:
- Name the reason you applied to YC. The check, the network, the city or the timing. Pick from the matching section above.
- Apply to a rolling program now if timing matters: Accel Atoms, AI House and a16z speedrun read applications as they arrive.
- Line up the next deadlines. Batch programs list their dates in the Next deadlines strip in room 03, soonest first. YC itself still considers late applications, without a promised answer date (quoted).
- Compare the deals before you accept one. Divide the check by the stake, as the equity guide does, and subtract any fees.
Put the programs you pick in My launch with the + on each poster, and note the day you expect to hear back:

09How we checked
Every quote here comes from the program's own pages, with the exact words, as we read them on 29 or 30 September 2026; each program's page on the list shows the source and date of each fact. What we did: we read each place's own pages and checked its link; every table row and poster shows the date of our last link check. Programs change their terms and calendars between batches, so read the current page before you apply. This is not legal or investment advice.
Nobody pays to be listed or to appear in a guide. Read how we check for the details.
10Questions
What is the best alternative to Y Combinator?
It depends on why YC doesn't fit. For a check of similar size, look at a16z speedrun, Neo, PearX, the South Park Commons Founder Fellowship, Accel Atoms and Boost VC. To apply without waiting for a batch, Accel Atoms and AI House review on a rolling basis. For no equity at all, see accelerators that take no equity. We don't rank programs: we have no acceptance rates or results.
Which accelerators invest as much as YC?
By their own pages, a16z speedrun, Neo, PearX, the South Park Commons Founder Fellowship and Accel Atoms publish checks at or above YC's, and Boost VC leads pre-seed rounds at about the same size. The amounts are in the table in this guide and quoted in how much equity accelerators take.
Are there accelerators like YC that don't require moving to San Francisco?
Yes. Techstars Anywhere is remote-first, Accel Atoms says it backs founders building from anywhere, AI House asks for a month in Seattle rather than a move, and Seedcamp is a European investor. YC, a16z speedrun and PearX expect you in San Francisco for the program.
What should I do if YC rejects me?
We can't know why a single application was turned down. Start from the reason you applied to YC and pick from the matching section of this guide. Rolling programs such as Accel Atoms and AI House let you apply right away, and the next batch deadlines are in the strip in room 03.
Do YC alternatives accept solo founders?
Several say so. YC itself says it regularly accepts solo founders, PearX says it welcomes them, a16z speedrun accepts them but prefers teams, and AI House states a separate starting check for solo founders. Accelerators for solo founders quotes each one.
