Uneed vs Product Hunt: who picks the date, who sees the launch, and what the votes decide
Uneed vs Product Hunt from each site's own pages: who picks your launch date, what's free, who reaches the homepage and what the upvotes decide.
By Venture ListPublished Updated Links checked September 2026How we check
Product Hunt and Uneed are both free to launch on, but free means different things. On Product Hunt you pick the day and pay nothing; whether your launch reaches the homepage is up to Product Hunt's team. On Uneed, by its own account, every launch reaches the homepage, but a free launch gets a date Uneed assigns, and it has to reach an upvote score of 10 to stay published. To choose your own date on Uneed, you pay.
So the choice comes down to your date. With a fixed launch day coming soon, Product Hunt costs nothing and Uneed costs a skip. If you can plan months ahead, do both, which is what Uneed's own help page advises: "We still think you should launch on Product Hunt." Below, each rule in the site's own words, read on 2 October 2026.

02What each one costs
Product Hunt's launch guide answers the question in one line:
D035Product HuntCost
“Is Product Hunt free? Yes. It's 100% free to use.”
Our reading: Free
Uneed's free option is a waiting line:
D038UneedCost
“Yes. Submitting is free, and so is the waiting line: we assign your launch date automatically, between 30 days and 5 months out.”
Our reading: Free; $14.99 fast-track; $29.99 to skip the line
The two paid options, from Uneed's pricing page (opens in a new tab): Fast-track ("Don't want to pick a date? We assign you a slot in about 14 days.") and Skip the line ("Launch a new product and choose your launch date."). Their prices are in the receipt above. A Relaunch, for a product that has launched on Uneed before, is a separate paid option on the same page.
03Who picks the date
Product Hunt. You do. From its help page on posting (opens in a new tab): "you can schedule your launch for a future date. The site operates on 24-hour periods in PST so your post will go live on the site at 12:01 AM PST." Its launch guide (opens in a new tab) says "The best day to launch is the day on which you're most prepared."
Uneed. On the free line, Uneed does:
D038UneedApproval
“We assign your launch date, at most 5 months out. An upvote score of 10 to stay published, 20 for the do-follow backlink.”
Our reading: Free line: Uneed assigns the launch date, at most 5 months out; needs an upvote score of 10 to stay published
Its FAQ (opens in a new tab) explains how the line moves: "At least 30 free launches from the waiting line, plus every paid launch (Fast-track, Skip the waiting line, relaunches). When a lot of products are waiting, free launches go up to 50 a day, so the free wait never goes past 5 months."
Two traps from Uneed's help page on what happens after you submit (opens in a new tab). Submitting doesn't put you in line: "Nothing is scheduled until you go to your dashboard and choose how you want to launch." And a date on the free line is not a promise: "a free submission can still be declined before launch day." The FAQ adds that a product that isn't ready "will be removed from the waiting line if it's not ready a week before its launch date."
One thing the two share: the clock. Uneed's help page says "Your page goes live at 12:00 AM PST on your launch date", the same midnight in Pacific time as Product Hunt.
04Who sees the launch
Product Hunt features a selection. Its featuring guidelines (opens in a new tab): "While we appreciate all submissions, not every product can be featured on the homepage." The rest stay up: "all submitted products are visible in the All feed", by its help page on the homepage (opens in a new tab). The guidelines list what it does not feature, including waitlisted products, directories or lists, templates, boilerplates and services. And "Engagement Isn't Everything": votes alone don't decide. If you are not featured, you "can always resubmit a product after 6 months", by its page on how things reach the homepage (opens in a new tab).
Uneed puts every launch on the homepage and limits how many there are. Its comparison page (opens in a new tab): it "keeps daily launches deliberately low — between 25 and 45 products launch every day, depending on how many people skipped the waiting line. That's how we guarantee every submitted product actually appears on the homepage." The two Uneed pages give different daily numbers; the FAQ's, quoted above, is the one tied to the five-month promise.
Uneed reviews free submissions instead. Its page on what it accepts (opens in a new tab) declines generic AI wrappers, low-effort tools, copycats, closed or invite-only products, and "Over-saturated categories". Paid launches skip that filter: "Submissions from the paid queue are never declined", except adult products and closed or invite-only ones, which are refunded.
05What the votes decide
Product Hunt sets one rule for promoting your launch, in its launch guide: "you cannot ask people directly to upvote your product. Instead, ask them to visit and comment."
Uneed answers the other way. Asked "Can I upvote my own product?", its FAQ says "Yes, you can, and you should". What counts is a score, not a head count: "Each upvote counts with the voter's multiplier", so "a score of 10 can come from fewer than 10 people", by its page on what happens below a score of 10 (opens in a new tab). The verdict comes the day after launch. For a free launch:
- A score of 20 or more: it stays published with a followed link.
- 10 to 19: it stays published with a nofollow link.
- Below 10: it goes back to your dashboard "and can't join the free line again". To launch it, you pay.
Fast-track launches always stay published. Products that joined the line before Uneed's September 2026 reopening keep the older rule: a score of 10 keeps both the listing and the followed link. Uneed also removes votes it considers fake and "can stop the launch", by its page on why upvotes get removed (opens in a new tab); paying does not change that.
06The link
Uneed states its link rules in full. Its FAQ: "Skip the line and Relaunch keep their do-follow backlink permanently, even if the launch underperforms. Fast-track keeps it from an upvote score of 10 on launch day, free launches from an upvote score of 20. Below that, the link becomes nofollow." Its pages also print a domain-rating score for the link; we don't repeat SEO scores we can't check.
None of the Product Hunt pages we read mention links. If a link is your reason to launch, read do startup directories help SEO? first: it quotes what Google says about links from directories and launch sites.
07Accounts
Product Hunt's help page: "You'll need a personal account to post a product on Product Hunt. Company accounts cannot hunt or post products." New accounts "must complete the onboarding process before gaining access to post", so set yours up before launch week.
Uneed asks later: "No account needed to start — we scrape your page first, then ask you to sign up so your submission is saved."
08Which one, or both
Your date is fixed and close. Product Hunt is free on any day you pick. On Uneed, Skip the line is the only way to choose the same day.
You can plan months ahead. Join Uneed's free line first, then pick your Product Hunt day around the date Uneed gives you. Both start at midnight Pacific, so the same day works. Put the free line in early: how long a free launch waits has the other queues to line up with it.
Your product has a waitlist. Product Hunt doesn't feature waitlisted products unless people get in right away, and Uneed declines products its reviewers can't try. Launch when people can sign up and use it.
You built a directory, a template or a service. Product Hunt's guidelines exclude these from the homepage. Uneed's FAQ, asked "Can I submit a service-based product?", answers "Yes, of course".
Uneed and Product Hunt are two of the 19 launch platforms on the list; Product Hunt alternatives has the rest, and the launch plan puts them in order. Add both to My launch to keep the dates in one place.
09How we checked
We read Uneed's pricing page, FAQ and help pages, and Product Hunt's launch guide and help pages, on 2 October 2026. Every quote above comes from those pages, and each receipt carries the day we recorded that fact. Each poster shows the date of its last link check. Uneed's pricing page also prints audience figures; we leave them out because we can't check them, and we don't measure the traffic a launch brings. Nobody pays to be listed or to appear in a guide. Read how we check for the details.
10Questions
Is Uneed better than Product Hunt?
Neither is better in general; they work differently. Product Hunt lets you pick your day for free, but its team decides what is featured on the homepage. Uneed says every launch appears on its homepage, but a free launch waits for a date Uneed assigns. Uneed's own help page recommends launching on both.
How long is the Uneed free waiting line?
Uneed's FAQ says it assigns a free launch a date between 30 days and 5 months out, and launches more free products a day when the line is long so the wait never passes 5 months. The clock starts only when you join the line from your dashboard, and a free submission can still be declined before its date. Its two paid options give a sooner date.
What happens if my Uneed launch gets fewer than 10 upvotes?
On a free launch, a score below 10 sends the product back to your dashboard, and it can't join the free line again; you would need a paid launch. Between 10 and 19 it stays published with a nofollow link, and from 20 with a followed link. The score counts each voter's multiplier, so it can come from fewer than 10 people.
Can I launch on Uneed and Product Hunt on the same day?
Yes. Both go live at midnight Pacific time. Product Hunt lets you schedule any day; on Uneed, only Skip the line lets you choose the date, so either pay for it or schedule Product Hunt around the free date Uneed gives you.
Is Product Hunt free?
Yes. Its launch guide says it is free to use. You need a personal account, because company accounts cannot post, and new accounts finish an onboarding step before they can post.
