Accelerators for young founders: age limits, student programs and what happens to school, in each program's words
Programs for young founders and students: age limits, who has to drop out, and what YC, speedrun and Techstars expect from students, quoted and dated.
By Venture ListPublished Updated Links checked September 2026How we check
A few programs are built for founders who are young or still studying. On our list, the Thiel Fellowship takes "Anyone aged 22 or younger (and without a university degree)", Z Fellows says it has no age restriction and has worked with high school dropouts and college students, StartX runs a Student Immersive program for current Stanford students, and Neo's Residency takes student teams alongside startups. The big accelerators take students too: Y Combinator, a16z speedrun and Techstars NYC all say you can apply while studying, but expect you to work full time once the program starts.
The real difference between them is what happens to school. The Thiel Fellowship asks you to drop out if you're selected, Z Fellows says you don't need to, and StartX's student program is built around your classes. This guide quotes each program's own words, with the page and the day we read it (2 October 2026).

The table shows each program's terms in the short form our posters use. The list files 8 programs as fellowships, which back a person early; Thiel and Z Fellows are among them.
01The short answer
- An age limit: the Thiel Fellowship, 22 or younger and without a degree. You leave school to accept it.
- Any age, from high school up: Z Fellows, a one-week program. You don't leave school.
- For students at one university: StartX, for the Stanford community. Berkeley SkyDeck makes UC-affiliated companies a priority.
- Student teams welcome: Neo's Residency, three months in San Francisco.
- Students may apply, full time if accepted: Y Combinator, a16z speedrun and Techstars NYC.
- Early in your career: Entrepreneur First.
02An age limit: the Thiel Fellowship
The Thiel Fellowship is the only program on our list whose page states an age limit. Its FAQ (opens in a new tab), read on 2 October 2026: "What is the age limit to apply? Anyone aged 22 or younger (and without a university degree) is eligible to apply." Both conditions count. Asked whether a degree rules you out, "Am I eligible for the fellowship if I’ve received a university degree (undergraduate or graduate)?", the FAQ answers "No."
School is the catch. "Can I apply to the Fellowship if I’m still in school? Yes — though if you’re selected you’ll need to drop out in order to accept the Fellowship."
The rest of the FAQ is less strict than people expect:
- No company needed: "You don’t need to have incorporated a company or built a full product yet, but at a minimum you’ll need to demonstrate meaningful progress toward a concrete vision."
- No team needed: "No — we review and accept applicants as individuals."
- No move: "If I receive the Fellowship, do I need to move to San Francisco? No. Thiel Fellows are based all over the world."
- No deadline: it takes applications year round (how long accelerators take to answer).
What it pays, and that it takes no equity, is quoted in accelerators that take no equity. Thiel Fellowship on the list.
03No age limit: Z Fellows
Z Fellows describes who it is for in one line:
A064Z FellowsKind
“Z Fellows are technical builders of all ages working on side projects and startups.”
Our reading: fellowship
Its home page (opens in a new tab), read on 2 October 2026: "There have been Z Fellow high school dropouts, college students, and people with full-time jobs .... there's no age restriction to apply!" Unlike Thiel, it doesn't ask you to leave school: "Do I need to drop out or quit my job? No."
It is short and mostly online. The program is "A one-week experience bringing together ten builders with founders of billion dollar companies." On where: "Cohorts are mostly virtual, with the last day of the program in-person in SF or NYC. Most Z Fellows end up coming to SF or NYC for the entire week." You don't need a company either: "No. We can help you set up one." It reviews applications on a rolling basis; its optional check is in how much equity accelerators take. Z Fellows on the list.
04Programs for students at one university
StartX, for the Stanford community. Its FAQ (opens in a new tab), read on 2 October 2026, describes the student track: "The Student Immersive (Student-in-Residence) program is designed for current Stanford students who are building a company while completing their degree. Students are expected to prioritize their academic commitments and work on their startup part-time during the academic year." The same answer adds: "The program is structured to fit around class schedules while still requiring meaningful, sustained progress on the venture over the program period."
Its other programs need a Stanford founder: teams may apply "as long as at least one founder has a qualifying Stanford affiliation and holds a significant equity stake in the company". The FAQ's list of who counts starts with "Degree-seeking student (undergraduate, master’s, MBA, PhD)" and includes alumni "who completed at least three academic quarters", faculty and postdocs; certificate and online-only programs don't count. Applications open three times a year: "from mid-January to mid-February for the Summer cohort, from mid-May to mid-June for the Fall cohort, and from early September to early October for the Spring cohort." It takes no equity (accelerators that take no equity). StartX on the list.
Berkeley SkyDeck names UC-affiliated companies, along with international startups, as a priority; its words are in accelerators for international founders. Berkeley SkyDeck on the list.
Endless Frontier Labs is run by NYU Stern but needs no NYU connection (accelerators in New York). Endless Frontier Labs on the list.
Conception X runs a part-time fellowship for PhD researchers in the UK and Europe, alongside the PhD; its rules are quoted in accelerators in the UK. Conception X on the list.
05Student teams in a residency: Neo
Neo's Residency invites students in its own words:
A009NEOKind
“Join a curated cohort of up to 20 startups and student teams and build something epic.”
Our reading: accelerator
The Residency puts that cohort in San Francisco for three months, plus a bootcamp in Texas (accelerators in San Francisco). The facts we hold don't say how a student team fits three months in the city around classes, so ask Neo before you apply. Neo on the list.
06Applying to YC, speedrun or Techstars as a student
The big accelerators don't have student programs, but they don't turn students away either. All three say the same thing in different words: apply while you study, work full time if you get in.
Y Combinator. Its FAQ (opens in a new tab), read on 2 October 2026: "You can certainly apply when you are a full-time student or employee, but we expect the founders to commit to working full-time on their company during the batch and afterwards if accepted."
If the timing is wrong, YC has a route for it. Asked whether you can apply for a later batch, the FAQ says: "Yes. The most common way this happens is that you're currently a student, and you want to apply for the batch that starts after you graduate. We call this applying for Early Decision." It also speaks to debt: "If you have student loans, a mortgage, etc. you can use what you pay yourself from the YC investment to cover those." YC on the list.
a16z speedrun. Its FAQ (opens in a new tab), read the same day: "You can apply as a student or an employee, but our 12-week program requires a full-time commitment. We expect founders to dedicate themselves fully to building their startup during the program and beyond, to maximize its impact." a16z speedrun on the list.
Techstars NYC. Its program page (opens in a new tab): "You don't have to be full-time to apply to Techstars. However, if accepted into the program, we expect you'll dedicate full exclusivity to your startup with no other academic or work engagements." Other Techstars programs state their own terms on their own pages. Techstars on the list.
How the three deals compare is in YC vs Techstars vs a16z speedrun.
07Early in your career: Entrepreneur First
Entrepreneur First says its programs suit people early in their careers. It backs individuals before they have a cofounder or a company; how that works, next to Antler, is in Antler vs Entrepreneur First. Entrepreneur First on the list.
08Drop out, take time off or stay in school
From the pages above, not advice:
- Leave school to accept: the Thiel Fellowship.
- Stay in school: Z Fellows says you don't need to drop out; StartX's Student Immersive program expects part-time work on the startup during the academic year.
- Full time during the program: Y Combinator, a16z speedrun and Techstars NYC. YC's Early Decision lets you apply now for the batch after you graduate.
- A degree rules you out: the Thiel Fellowship. We found no degree rule on the other programs' pages.
If you're applying alone, what each program says about solo founders is in accelerators for solo founders. Deadlines change every batch; the live dates are in the Next deadlines strip in room 03. Put the programs you'll apply to in My launch with the + on each poster:

09How we checked
Every quote comes from the program's own page. We read the pages of the Thiel Fellowship, Z Fellows, StartX, Y Combinator, a16z speedrun and Techstars NYC on 2 October 2026. Neo's quote is from our own check of its Residency page, dated in the receipt; on 2 October 2026 the page loaded its text in a way we could not re-read. A program is in this guide only when its own page says something about age, students or career stage. We don't take part in these programs and can't tell you how many students any of them accepts: none publishes that number on the pages we read. Each table row and poster shows the date of our last link check.
Nobody pays to be listed or to appear in a guide. Read how we check for the details.
10Questions
What is the age limit for the Thiel Fellowship?
Its FAQ says anyone aged 22 or younger, and without a university degree, can apply. If you're selected while still in school, you have to drop out to accept the Fellowship.
Can students apply to Y Combinator?
Yes. YC's FAQ says you can apply as a full-time student, but founders are expected to work full time on the company during the batch and afterwards if accepted. Students can also apply for the batch that starts after they graduate, which YC calls Early Decision.
Are there accelerators for high school students?
Z Fellows says it has no age restriction and has worked with high school dropouts and college students; it is a one-week program, mostly online, and you don't have to leave school. The Thiel Fellowship takes anyone 22 or younger without a degree, but asks fellows who are in school to drop out.
Do I have to drop out of college to join an accelerator?
Not at most programs. The Thiel Fellowship requires it. Z Fellows says you don't need to drop out, and StartX's Student Immersive program is built for Stanford students who keep studying. Y Combinator, a16z speedrun and Techstars NYC take student applicants but expect full-time work during the program.
Which accelerators are for college students?
StartX, for Stanford students, alumni and faculty; Neo's Residency, which takes student teams; and Z Fellows, which has worked with college students. Berkeley SkyDeck gives priority to UC-affiliated companies.
